Vegan dining in Luzern, Switzerland

While spending a couple of whirlwind days in Luzern, we found a delicious vegan sandwich shop on the lower level of the train station in the center of the city. (The train station, by the way, is the cleanest and loveliest we’ve ever seen, with a giant grocery store and myriad shops from chocolatiers to clothing stores; it’s actually fancier than many high-end malls in the U.S.)

Veganitas is an all-vegan, takeout-only sandwich shop featuring pita-bread sandwiches, salads, and sweets like cinnamon rolls, cookies, and cheesecake. There’s a standing table amid the other takeaway places in the station (eating in this lovely bahnhof is not nearly as unpalatable as you might think, truly).

We sampled the seitan pita and the “Crispy Veganitas,” both absolutely delicious and fairly healthy for fast food. The seitan pita (below on the right) is stuffed with seitan, tomatoes, carrots, and cabbage and is smothered in vegan mayo. And the Crispy Veganitas pita comprises a jackfruit “chicken” patty, fried to perfection, with tomatoes, a mustard-mayo sauce, tomatoes, and iceberg lettuce.

One pita sandwich is incredibly filling, but if you’re super hungry, try one of the sides, which include fries (and loaded fries, and dirty fries) or the vegan cheese balls or jackfruit nuggets. And don’t forget the desserts!

If you’re traveling around Switzerland and need a quick meal or snack or sweets, look for other Veganitas locations, in Zurich (which has a restaurant) and Bern (also takeaway only).
