Fabel Friet serves Dutch fries (“not French fries or Flemish fries, its website makes clear) — these fries are made from “top-quality Agria potatoes grown on Dutch soil, specially developed for frying.”
We totally respect that.
And while this is not a vegan joint, the fries themselves are naturally vegan and well worth it, and among the sauces there are several plant-based options, such as vegan mayo, ketchup, curry ketchup, peanut sauce, and chopped onions.
We found this Fabel Friet at Runstraat 1 in Amsterdam by noticing the long queue and seeing the potatoes in the window (there are five locations all over Amsterdam). The place is tiny and takeaway only, and one of the employees was outside managing the line in (which moved quickly, but do download the QR code while in line because once inside the line moves even more quickly) and then also managing another line opposite, for where you wait to pick up your order.
Once we discovered Fabel Friet, we finally made sense of the signs we’d seen further down the street asking people not to eat in front of homes and storefronts (who knew the little drawing was of a person eating Dutch fries?).
Another sign hangs above the shop.
Since I adore fries with mayo and so rarely get to enjoy this combination (it’s so popular in Europe but not so much in the U.S., and especially challenging for vegans), this is what I ordered … and the mayo was creamy and delicious, not watery as some plant-based mayonnaise can be. And the Dutch fries were, as we suspected, perfection: hot, crispy, savory, perfectly salted, and delicious both with and without the mayo. This is definitely a spot to visit for a snack when in Amsterdam, and fortunately you won’t have to look too far; I encountered another shop while taking a walk not far from the location we visited.
